Osteoporosis |
This Unit was about the skeletal system and we learned how it functions, and what bones make up the body, and how we grow and repair our injured bones. To start it off, we learned the common types of bone disorders such as arthritis ( inflammation of joints); Osteoporosis (condition in which bones have lost minerals); Scoliosis ( Abnormal curvature of the spine); Kyphosis ( spine develops a hump in theoretic part); Lordosis ( curvature of lumbar spine and forward pelvic tilt); and finally Rickets ( weakening and softening of the bones).
Then we learned about the roles of vitamins and cells in the bones such as how Vitamin D is need to absorb calcium, Vitamin K is a group of fat soluble vitamins and how Vitamin C is critical to make collagen. We then learned about Ossification ( process of bones forming) and how the Osteocytes ( mature bone cells), Osteoblasts ( bone building cells) and Osteoclasts (breaking up of bone tissue/calcitonin are inhibited) are all types of bone cells.
Next we learned about Bone repair and how after fractures such as compound (tears through skin), comminuted (3+ pieces of bone), and oblique (fracture at an angle), the bleeding produces blood clots while inflammation attracts white blood cells to help repair the bone. Fibroblasts then arrive at the scene and secrete dense connective tissue while then the chondroblasts and osteoblasts arrive.
- Finally we learned about the major bones of the body and different types of joints. (Major bones of the body will be to the right). For the joint Structural classification, we learned Fibrous (immovable), cartilaginous (immovable or slightly movable), and Synovial (freely movable). For functional classification, synarthroses means immovable joints, amphiarthroses means slightly movable and diarthroses means freely movable.
- I want to learn more about the elbow and shoulder because I am a baseball player and I've already injured my shoulder and it would be good for the future to know more about them.
- Reflect on your learning and growth as a student. Consider experiences during labs, 20 Time, homework etc. Check in on your New Year's goals too. Growth as a student is going well i guess... i mean I'm still a kid no matter what and i guess I've learned how to be an adult. Experiences during labs have gone well including 20 time and homework has been going well too. New Years goals are coming in well.
